METRONow: Enhancing Mobility in the Region

METRO is proud to unveil METRONow – a multifaceted plan aimed at delivering superior transit services and solving critical mobility needs in the Houston region.
The METRONow plan provides a roadmap for ridership growth, financial sustainability, and the establishment of key priorities that will strengthen the transit culture in the Houston area.
“The new Board of Directors is laser-focused on ensuring all we do ties to ridership and mobility,” said METRO Board Chair Elizabeth Gonzalez Brock. "METRONow is the roadmap to a sustainable, fiscally responsible public transit system. By meeting our customers where they are today, we will make it easy for people to choose METRO.”
The plan focuses on four key elements: safety, cleanliness, reliability, and accessibility. METRO has already begun working towards our goal of “mobility for all” by:
- Dedicating $7 million to enhance technology and increase METRO Police presence and security patrols on buses and trains in 2025
- Implementing service changes to improve the frequency, hours of operation and efficiency for a more convenient experience
- Advancing key roadway and sidewalk repair projects for a better, smoother ride for all vehicles
- Expanding microtransit to connect riders to essential destinations and METRO services in Downtown, Second Ward and Third Ward
- Continuing to enhance accessibility at bus stops with a goal of an additional 700 completed by the end of fiscal year 2025
- Allocating $2.4M in 2025 to increase daily cleaning frequency across the system, including a 24-hour rapid response cleaning crew.
These are just a few of of the exciting transit improvements designed and implemented with rider convenience and satisfaction in mind.
“We have challenges, but METRO is on the right track with new leadership and better collaboration with the city and law enforcement than before,” city of Houston Mayor John Whitmire said. “Every great city has a viable, successful public transit system. As mayor, I expect METRONow to focus on using resources wisely to build transit that people will use: a cleaner, safer and more efficient system that improves the overall customer experience.”
METRONow also includes a focus on preparing for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, including prioritizing direct routes to and from our airports. Airport service routes will be permanent fixtures in the METRO system.
Collaboration is a key component of the METRONow plan. The Authority will continue to serve as a secondary responder, moving people to safety during emergency events.
